A Competition Is About More Than Just Winning

On 20 August, a discussion titled “How Not to Lose Even If You Don’t Win: An Honest Conversation About Competitions” will take place in the Theatre Hall with the participation of the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music.

Together with experts, participants will explore how to choose competitions and repertoire, prepare for a performance, cope with nerves, and respond to feedback from the jury. They will also discuss a practical question: can competition diplomas really affect admission to a music university?

The conversation will also touch on topics that are rarely discussed publicly: the atmosphere backstage, professional networking, disappointment after an unsuccessful performance, and why even first place does not guarantee a successful career.

Sometimes the most valuable prize in a competition is not first place or a certificate, but the opportunity to learn something new and understand where to go next.
